In my previous posts, I explored the concept of mindset and how important it is to believe in yourself, and to be persistent. Here I offer you five keys to strengthen how you see the world.
- Constantly Fill Your Mind with Empowering Information
People become mentally weak because they don’t counteract the pervasive negative voices of family, friends, and society. The only way to do this is to constantly fill your mind with positive, uplifting, inspiring, and educational content. Watch less TV and read more books. Think of your mindset like a muscle—it must be exercised consistently. When reading, use a $100 note as a bookmark to reinforce that there is a wealth of knowledge and money in every book you read.
Skip a meal but never skip reading time to nourish your mind and sharpen your entrepreneurial axe.
- Do What Scares You
The only way to conquer fear is to face it. Do what you fear enough times, and eventually you develop a confidence you never thought you had. Don’t let your fear of what could happen make nothing happen. As author Susan Jeffers puts it, “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”
- Leverage the Power of Visualization
Visualization is one of the most powerful ways to boost our confidence and performance. It’s proven that our brains don’t know the difference between a real experience and something we imagine. Many studies have shown that athletes who visualize their performances before competing far outperform their competitors who do not.
We become what we think about the most. Visualize yourself achieving your goals on a consistent basis. The more clearly you can see it, the more likely you will be to achieve it.
- Make Stress Your Friend
Stress is not your enemy; rather, it’s a valuable tool and ally if you can harness its force. Your mental faculty is heightened when you are pushed against a tough problem or deadline. Stress is your body preparing to meet challenges. Don’t fight stress—embrace it. See how it’s helping you. Feed on its energy.
It should be noted that there’s a difference between chronic versus temporary stress. If you’re experiencing chronic stress, you probably need to make major changes in your life. Constantly staying in stress mode causes adrenal fatigue. Temporary stress, however, can be our friend—if we allow our bodies to heal.
- Leverage “Goal-Getters” to Meet Your Goals
Goal-getters are the small yet significant steps you take each day to reach your goals. For example, suppose you have a goal to lose 20 pounds. Your goal-getters could be eating healthier, exercising for 30 minutes a day, etc.
The idea is to spend less time, focus, and energy on the goals themselves, and more on goal-getters, which are the things that, if you do them consistently and persistently, will naturally and inevitably result in the achievement of the goal.
Your Limits—and Your Freedom—Are In Your Mind
It’s been said so often that it’s become cliché, but it really is true: Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right. Your limits are a product of your mindset—and they can be lifted and freedom can be found by cultivating the right mindset.
“You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength,” wrote Marcus Aurelius in his Meditations.ˆ
In my next post, I will talk about the people in your life – and how important it is to develop your own “inner circle” of confidantes, mentors and true friends. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on mental strength: do you visualize what you can do? Do you see yourself so that you can plan to achieve where that is? Thank you for sharing.
